呼伦贝尔市是全国面积最大的一个地级市，也是“世界上土地管辖面积最大的城市”。呼伦贝尔市境内的呼伦贝尔草原是世界四大草原之一，被称为世界上最好的草原。本世纪初发现呼伦贝尔地下石油资源。呼伦贝尔市总面积26.3万平方公里，相当于山东省与江苏省两省之和。东邻黑龙江省，西、北与蒙古国、俄罗斯相接壤，是中俄蒙三国的交界地带，与俄罗斯、蒙古国有1723公里的边境线，有8个国家级一、二类通商口岸，其中满洲里口岸是全国最大的陆路口岸。

呼伦贝尔市西部位于内蒙古高原东北部，北部与南部被大兴安岭南北直贯境内。东部为大兴安岭东麓，东北平原——松嫩平原边缘。地形总体特点为：西高东低。地势分布呈由西到东地势缓慢过渡。
气候特点
呼伦贝尔市气候分布特点以大兴安岭为分界线：
1．从气候类型为：岭东区为季风气候区，岭西区为大陆气候区。
2．从年降水量类型为：岭东区位半湿润性气候，年降水量在500—800mm；岭西区为半干旱性气候，年降水量为300－500mm。
3．年气候总特征为：冬季寒冷干燥，夏季炎热多雨。年温度差、日期温差大。
植被分布特点
植被分布分布由森林向草原过渡，植被的分布依年降水量决定。
岭东地区为半湿润地区多分布为森林（针叶林混交林）——大兴安岭林区。
岭西地区为半干旱地区多分布为半干旱草原——呼伦贝尔草原。
